Taxes...how do property taxes work here? (see all)

How do taxes work? Are the current taxes relevant to what I will pay? There are discounts for certain ages, and military service. There are also discounts if you owner occupy the house.  So the current tax on any home may be higher or lower than it may be for the next person. Two houses next to each other could be taxed with the same overall assessment, but one could be owner occupied by a senior citizen, who was in the military. He would have a triple exemption. The house next door is a rental. No exemptions. When the buyer purchases, the tax is modified to fit the circumstances of the new owner.
